[Technical] Notebooks for New Staff - DET needs to help

Words of wisdom again. Jim.
We now have many Macs on the network both a notebooks and desktops BUT there are two main problems:

- Macs consume far more tech assistance due to integration problems with a Windows network environment (eg many apps do not yet
offer Mac based versions etc etc etc) Roll on the new Intel Macs !
- anecdotal observations indicate staff with Macs tend to have a higher proportion of non work related activity on their macs while
at work and home

I have found it fun at times - we set up a computer lab of dual boot XP/Linux machines a couple of years ago. I even got the
'Novelclient'
to work, and 'mapped' the students' network drives - all in French just to make it more enjoyable! If you have a programme to use a
mixed environment it is ok because one plans the environment to suit, but trying to integrate the odd rogue Mac (or linux box)is
where the pain comes from.

At Chelt in pre-Stephen days I got a couple of staffroom Macs onto the NT network, they could use printers shared on the PCs etc. I
was pleased with myself for doing this, but it was more for my entertainment than for practical purposes.

Pardon the tortured English, but I hope you get the drift of it.

rgds
Jim
