Which is why I said it is important for students to learn the basics
first. Maybe I rwote it clusmy.

Later I was thinking about the engine driver analogy - steam drivers
had to have a good knowledge of how the engine worked - how to lay
the fire, how to maintain the fire, how to anticipate loads and
gradients and to ensure that the fire and boiler had enough
'potential energy' in reserve for the road ahead. The diesel driver
did not need such an intimate knowledge of his engine, and most of
the knowledge he might have had about steam did not apply to his new tool.
