[Systems Engineering Teachers' Mailing List] Course in Safe Use of Machinery for Technology Teaching

Your message said all technology teachers have to be assessed, specifically metal and wood. Does that mean other techies do not have to do the assessment? To be more specific, there was no mention of Systems Engineering (even though this is a Systems Engineering mailing list-don't the woodies and metals have a mailing list?)
So, do Systems Engineering teachers need to complete the assessment, and therefore the course?

Subject: [Systems Engineering Teachers' Mailing List] Venues for Course in Safe Use of Machinery for Technology Teaching

 SUBJECT: Course in Safe Use of Machinery for Technology Teaching
(Woodwork and Metalwork) - 21820VIC
SUMMARY:
This memorandum provides information about the Course in Safe Use of Machinery for Technology Teaching (Woodwork and Metalwork) and the compulsory assessment of teachers' competency in the use of the machinery. NOTE: It is a requirement that all Technology Teachers must have completed the competency assessment by December 2009.
 Background
The Department is committed to providing healthy and safe workplaces for all employees, students and visitors. This includes maintaining pl! ant and systems of work that are, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to health.
 In 2007 DEECD piloted the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) accredited Course in Safe Use of Machinery for Technology Teaching - 21820VIC with course content developed for DEECD by Holmesglen TAFE.
 The Course
The purpose of the course is to instruct woodwork and metalwork technology teachers from Government, Independent and Catholic schools in the safe operation and basic maintenance of woodwork and metalwork machinery. The VRQA accredited course comprises 3 units:

*                    Applying OHS Principles to Technology Teaching - VBQU618 - 8hrs   Prerequisite - Nil
*                   Safely Operate and Maintain Wood Working Machines - VBQU619 - 16hrs Pre! requisite - VBQU618
* Safely Operate and Maintain Metal Working Machines- VBQU620 - 8 hrs Prerequisite - VBQU618
There will be a competency assessment as part of the training (see below for further information).
Course Providers
The Department sought expressions of interest from suitably qualified TAFEs. The list of course providers to Victorian Government Schools is attached.
 These TAFEs have the capability to work in partnership with schools in their area/region through their participation in the VET and VCAL courses.
 The Employee Health Unit has provided course materials and machine safety posters to the selected TAFEs. The machine safety posters can be downloaded at:
http://WWW.noel-Arnold.Com.au/deecd/external_resources.HTML<http://www.noel-arnold.com.au/deecd/external_resources.HTML>

 Is the course mandatory for woodwork and metalwork teachers?
While the course will not be mandatory the assessment of competency in the safe use of machinery is compulsory. Nevertheless it is expected that the course ! will be beneficial to all woodwork and metalwork technology teachers a s part of their ongoing professional development.
 Funding
Training funds for technology have been allocated to each Region. This regional allocation is calculated based on both the number of secondary and primary/secondary schools in the region and the number of enrolments in those schools.
Each Regional Office has been provided with funds to cover the cost of State School teachers attending the course. Teachers from Independent and Catholic Schools will need to arrange payment by their own schools, direct to the TAFE College provider.
Training Program
The training program will be provided by approved Institutes of TAFE in each region. The venues and dates for training programs are being negotiated and will depend on the registered interest from schools. Some courses will be run at recomm! ended schools, while others will be run at the TAFE Colleges.
 Actions Required
* Technology Teachers must have completed the competency assessment by December 2009.
Teachers should contact their nearest TAFE provider from the attached list to check on dates, and register interest.
