Hi everyone

As we farewell Paula we congratulate Phil Feain who will take over in the role.

I have known Phil for many years - almost as long as Paula - and know he will be a wonderful leader of the IT community. He has been a continuing presence on our online communities since they started in 1996.

Please join me in congratulating Phil and let us all give him our full support in his new role.

Dear colleagues

Thank you to Kevork and the entire IT community for the privilege of working with you over the past decades – yes it has been a long time! I have had a fortunate career, beginning my working life as a commerce teacher. But by the late 1970s my interests and work steered towards IT – actually my first ‘big’ IT project was to develop a database for the education department to facilitate statewide teacher transfers.

Curriculum has been my passion and I have been able to pursue this through a range of curriculum iterations – Frameworks, CSF, VELS, Australian Curriculum, Victorian Curriculum and VCE.

Thank you for making me feel part of a very special community – in some ways being a curriculum manager can be isolating as you work on your own, but belonging to a community has been very important to me and my work. A special thank you to Kevork – you have been an outstanding educator, facilitator and a long-term friend.

I am extremely pleased to announce that Phil Feain from St Kevin’s College will be the new Digital Technologies Curriculum Manager and he will be taking up this position at the end of January 2017. Congratulations Phil – I’m certain that your expertise and generosity will be highly valued and respected by this online community. I wish you well in this rewarding and challenging position.

I finish work at the VCAA on 23 December, though my edumail account will be active for a couple of months.

Thank you and best wishes for a safe and restful holiday.

Warmest regards

Paula

Dear Everyone

With Paula’s retirement on our minds for most of this term, I wanted to express my thanks for all she has done for all of us in the IT community.

I have been privileged to work with Paula to support teachers and students in the delivery of the highest quality curriculum in Information Technology, Digital Technologies, Algorithmics and associated studies in the secondary school system since the early 1990s.

I have also operated a number of online communities since 1996 supporting teachers with their professional needs ( http://www.edulists.com.au ) . The teacher membership on these communities has been over a few thousand individuals over time. Paula’s presence on Edulists has made all of our lives so much easier as teachers. We are all grateful that she embraced and used the technology from the earliest days.

At all times Paula has made herself available during or outside working hours, to answer questions, provide clarification, offer resources and material to make the role of teachers as effective and as professional as possible. She has always lifted those who were down, eloquently resolved any misunderstandings or frustrations calmly and professionally be that between individuals, groups or organisations.

Paula has been respected universally within and beyond the Information Technology teaching fraternity as one who is fair minded, even tempered, judicious, respectful and above all supportive of her colleagues in the classroom. She has led by example and never shied away from challenges to raise the standard of teaching and student outcomes.

Above all , Paula has been a wonderful advocate for the teachers and students of digital and information technology and I can say we will miss her and hope she will stay in touch.

Happy retirement Paula :)
