I guess you all know the old chestnut about the IBM memo that was fed into a COBOL machine – it compiled successfully but failed to run.

I just ran across this comment on COBOL by Turing Award recipient Edsger Dijkstra in 1975

"The use of COBOL cripples the mind; its teaching should, therefore, be regarded as a criminal offense."

In 1975 somebody was trying to teach me COBOL, I was inclined to agree.
