[Year 12 SofDev] Advice for teaching combined classes

Thanks for your quick responses. Its always good to know I not the only
one in this situation. :)

I have taught SD twice in the past:

 * once combined with ITA - my kids mostly scored above average that year.
I had around 10 kids altogether and taught some bits separately, some
combined (I think it was the last year of the pervious study design and
there was quite a bit of overlap). Year 12s were fairly self-motivated and
could work independently when necessary.

 * once combined with 12IT - not so successful. Approx 20 in the class.
Year 11s quite unproductive and disengaged unless I was working directly
with them. Made it hard for the SD kids to stay focussed. I found little
overlap between the two study designs.

In 2014 I will again have approx 20 in the class. Mostly Year 11s. My
concern is keeping them engaged AND working independently. I'd love to
have more kids get really excited about IT and programming so that it is
feasible to run a standalone SD class in 2015!!

This year I didn't use the NCIS challenge, but I did have my Year 11 class
using CodeAcademy to learn Python and they found that really engaging,
worked at their own pace, lots of homework too. We also have Google Apps
and I have trained the Year 11s to work more collaboratively, sharing
docs, emailing questions etc. I will probably also run an after-school
class for just the SD kids.

I would love to use lots of 'flipped' style resources but I won't get any
extra time allowance to create them my self!! Any suggestions of good
sources of podcasts / screencasts etc???? (I'm also year level coordinator
for 160 odd kids so all my time allowance at school is consumed by student
management!!!!)

Thank you all again for your support and ideas.

Kate

Important - This email and any attachments may be confidential. If received in error, please contact us and delete all copies. Before opening or using attachments check them for viruses and defects. Regardless of any loss, damage or consequence, whether caused by the negligence of the sender or not, resulting directly or indirectly from the use of any attached files our liability is limited to resupplying any affected attachments. Any representations or opinions expressed are those of the individual sender, and not necessarily those of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
