Hi Andrew

I use at least one double per week on prac and often the 2nd half of the
other double so that I can lift their skills up . It is also more
exciting for them and me. I teach this subject because I enjoy
programming.

I also get them to work through the exercises and chapter summaries
early and then we discuss them in class. The texts are good enough that
the students can read them first and then when we go over them in class
they have got some basis to work from - the "scaffolding " is already
started and we can "unpack" the detail with some hope of it being
"embedded" in their "previously learnt knowledge base".

(Yes I have been doing some PD !!!) ROFL

I give them plenty of past sacs to work from for theory and also for
prac so that when they come to the actual sacs they know the structure
and are comfortable with it ( I hope).

There is plenty of stuff on edulists site and do a search on the
archives of the emails and look at the vitta cd

Hi Andrew,

My advice is to start doing practical work straight away - as you have
pointed out, the theory in U3O1 is not practically based, so you can
effectively mix the course work with the programming folio quite well in
Term 1. That way, when you have finished U3O1, your students will (or
should be) well on their way.

Cheers,

Hi Andrew,

>From my experience, I find including a bit of practical programming from
the beginning helps keep them motivated when the theory starts getting a
bit heavy! No harm in starting early.

Cheers

Hi fellow SD teachers!

Im teaching SD for first time next year

Ive been making up a calendar for it based on Kevorks timeline from the
edulists site (thx kevork)

U301 seems fairly theoretical - i was wondering how many of you started
doing practical exercise on VB (or whatever language u use) earlier than
the commencement of U302?

My students are starting from a pretty low base as far as programming is
concerned - a couple of high flyers but the rest are basically
beginners. I was thinking of doing a little bit of prac each week from
the start of term 1, even though im going to be doing U301 then
