<font face="Calibri">Yes Neil, many teachers will only read The Age.
But I actually asked a small group of Year 10 kids about what newspaper
they would prefer on the moodle RSS and they chose the HeraldSun -
probably because for most of them if a newspaper comes into the house
at all it would be the Herald Sun not the Age. I figured if I put the
Age there they wouldn't bother reading the news, whereas if I put the
Herald Sun in the RSS feeds there would be more chance of them reading
it. <br>

I am not going to attempt to indoctrinate my students about which is
the better paper, if they would prefer to read about the latest TV soap
opera gossip rather than the latest Canberra soap opera gossip then so
be it, at least they are reading! I believe it is about relating to the
kids and their tastes and choices, not forcing my tastes and choices
upon them.<br>

Besides, as far as I could gather from the front page of the Age
website, they do not provide RSS feeds. Certainly it is not obvious on
their home page, but maybe I just couldn't find it.<br>
<br>
I also believe the Herald Sun is technologically a superior website -
certainly during the bushfires they used available technologies such as
embedding interactive google maps of the bushfire areas, allowing
people to post messages to relatives or friends to find them etc to a
much greater extent than the Age (which failed to use any of these
technologies at all). The Herald Sun also allows comments on news items
from anyone - you don't have to have an account with them to post a
comment, and I felt that commenting on some of the Tech News items
could be a good class activity for students at some stage. Overall the
Herald Sun website has embraced Web2.0 technologes, whereas The Age
website is still a pretty static Web1.0 site.<br>

The moodle site I set up on our web server was inaccessible for some
time today
- the message ACCESS: DENIED came up.<br>
Wondering why this was so I spent some time using my mobile broadband
internet
connection to log into it and investigate student logs and profile
pics,
looking for obscenities etc<br>
In frustration I returned to the home page only to scroll down and see
the RSS
feeds (Herald Sun Top Stories and Tech News) featuring articles on<br>
- NBL player involved in a s&x assault<br>
- Home and Away to feature a le$bi@n romance (It was
referred to as "Home and a Gay")<br>
- Gmail servers down due to p0rn attack<br>
(misspellings here so this email will hopefully get through Kevork's
filter
system!!)<br>
<br>
No wonder the filter had banned the site!!<br>
<br>
So I fixed it by completely deleting all of the RSS feeds, but I
contemplated
the fact that students in my class could get up and walk to the other
side of
the Library, pick up a copy of the Herald Sun, and read, in full, all
three
articles. Oh how their minds would become corrupt by this act!!!<br>

Yet the whole moodle site was blocked - even though it only displayed
the
headings!!<br>
<br>
Double Standards?? Or perhaps we should also ban students from reading
newspapers at school?????<br>
<br>
Sometimes ya just gotta have a giggle!<br>
