Moodle is to be extended by the department in order for Moodle integrate with roll marking and attendance and will be customised with ePortfolio and social networking support, using Mahara and elgg. The government admitted that the current strategy of throwing squillions of dollars at proprietary systems, designed for business and which lacked pedagogical development processes, was destined to fail. A spokesperson for DEECD said, "we screwed up royally with CASES and we'd rather not revisit that scenario again". Switched on teachers rejoiced at the decision as did bean counters who approved of the decision not to make the schools slaves to annual licensing fees. One teacher said, "it's great that the department is finally listening to us. This will save the department tens of thousands of dollars. I was beginning to think they were so far removed from teaching that they didn't have a clue what we actually need.
