Nice review article that presents the pros and cons of using an instant
messaging system.

Last Friday we turned on the IM feature of Moodle 1.5. No messages apart
from a :-) from a staff member and a student.

Will keep you posted on how this develops. Will remind students that all
chat is logged by default and see how this develops.

The answer is yes you can. I have attached a screen dump of a log entry made
when I was experimenting with Moodle one weekend.

Can the instant messages be
logged?

We find that informing the
students that everything they do on the computers is logged and will be used
against them in a court of law (ie YLC office) is very much a deterrent
against
misuse of the computer facilities.

Perhaps a notice re: amount of messaging, contents
of messages, messages are logged etc could be put on the moodle home
page?

It certainly sounds like a great idea to me - we
are currently rebuilding the admin block/PE facilites etc so communication
within the school is at an all time low. Instant messages could be great for
us
- but then again our population of moodlers currently stands at one - me (I
guess I can always message myself!)

Next semester I intend to fully functionalise my
IT courses on moodle so things should start to happen eventually.

Exciting times ahead!!

I think I agree with Rolan. However, consider that the messaging interface
is not as slick as MSN or a chat room It may prove a bit cumbersome for
students
to use regularly. Then again I haven't used it in a classroom situation so I
don't really know. It's good that it can be turned off if it goes out of
control. Being clear about how it should be used is a good way to start.

Hi all,

I was wondering, with the impending
release of Moodle version 1.5, what others thought of the instant messaging
feature that is in this version. Are people going to turn it off, or use it?
If
you use it, are there any specific things to do to make sure students don't
abuse it?

Personally, I would prefer it if it was only available
to staff, but I dont think there is that option.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

James
