There was a news embargo although it is interesting how social networking and SMS leaked information to me soon after the decision was made and again by myself. Hard to keep a secret online and open minded that the group picked a feral Victorian and educator on the edge like me. I am a bit nervous after a second phone call I got a day ago but I cannot say anything more at this stage (sits on hands). <br>

Thank you all for the many messages and calls I have been getting off list! Too many go go through or reply at once (thank goodness for GoogleGears and offline caching) .. so just a quick thank you to everybody who helped, especially my troupe of feral Australian animal hand puppets that I sometimes use to teach IT. With a splash of drama I used these to great effect at the ACCE2008 study tour to NECC2008 that VITTA so kindly sponsored me for and again at a leadership forum with the ACEC2008 conference in Canberra. Don't laugh, there is some serious learning (and rather scary VCE teaching) going on here. I keep promissing Renee that I will write something up for the VITTA journal about this activity .. <br>
<br>I will bless you all with a bit of peace and quiet from my dribbling as my family rolls on for a well earned break in a damp campervan, leaping from free wireless access point to point. Have a well earned break folks!<br>

awards are made by the state and territory member associations of ACCE.<br>

Roland Gesthuizen<br>

The most striking of Roland's qualities is his passion for the use of<br>
technology in education and the infectious way in which his passionate<br>
enthusiasm is transferred to his peers. This magnifies the already<br>
significant impact that Roland has as a positive role model for other<br>
teachers. He demonstrates all the qualities of an outstanding teacher<br>
within his own work and then extends that further through his tireless<br>
volunteer roles with multiple professional organizations.<br>
<br>
Roland's influence on the teacher community is evident at local, state,<br>
national and international levels. He is a highly active participant in<br>
the Web 2.0 environment, providing support and resources to others and<br>
demonstrating the power of that environment in all of his interactions.<br>
He is a regular presenter at conferences and furthermore he is often the<br>
person arranging all the support technology for the other conference<br>
presenters and participants.<br>
<br>
A recent highlight for Roland and recognition of the quality of his work<br>
was his selection as one of the exemplary teachers in the Leadership<br>
Symposium at NECC 2008, in San Antonio, Texas. His session demonstrated<br>
the use of simple, readily available technology and glove puppets to<br>
create uniqueeducational experiences for students for diverse cultural<br>
backgrounds. This exemplified his creative approach to teaching and his<br>
ability to enthuse others, yet it was just one of many different<br>
contributions that Roland could have used to illustrate his qualities as<br>
an exemplary teacher.<br>

Sue Urban<br>
<br>
Sue has had extensive experience in a variety of schools and school<br>
locations, both metropolitan and rural. As an early adopter of technology<br>
in her classroom, she has used an integrated approach with an emphasis on<br>
developing students' own thinking skills and responsible behaviour in<br>
technology use.<br>
<br>
Sue's endeavours to influence her peers are evident through the wide range<br>
of organisations to which she is a member and highly active contributor.<br>
Her expertise extends across many areas of technology in education and her<br>
support for highly gifted students brings another perspective to her work.<br>
<br>
At the state level, she works tirelessly in a volunteer role for the<br>
Computers in Education Group of South Australia, has contributed to<br>
national conferences as a presenter and as an active member of the<br>
organising committee and played a major role in the 15th Biennial World<br>
Conference of the World Council for Gifted Education.<br>
<br>
Sue has worked on projects with several state education authorities within<br>
her home State of South Australia and also with the state education<br>
authority in Tasmania.<br>

Paul Newhouse<br>
<br>
Paul Newhouse is an exceptional leader in the use of information and<br>
communication technologies in education, who, over many years, has<br>
continued to give unstintingly of his time, expertise and energy for the<br>
benefit of students, teachers and the community. Paul is recognised<br>
internationally, nationally and across Western Australia for his<br>
innovative and pioneering work.<br>
<br>
His driving commitment to making a difference to teaching and learning in<br>
schools is reflected in his high visibility to the profession through his<br>
direction and influence on ICT in the educational environment at school<br>
and university level. He is well known for his comprehensive research and<br>
ground-breaking practices in the use of portable computing devices and<br>
online learning and assessment.His most recent focus is on digital forms<br>
of assessment.<br>
<br>
As the Director of the Centre for Schooling and Learning Technologies<br>
(CSaLT) at ECU, Paul continues to initiate and guide research in ICT in WA<br>
schools and provides direction for the training of future teachers as they<br>
apply ICT in their profession. Individual teachers, principals of schools,<br>
whole schools, education departments, curriculum developers, tertiary<br>
students and Paul's academic peers have all witnessed and benefited by,<br>
Paul's selfless dedication to promoting and supporting the use of ICT in<br>
education.<br>

Monika Stinton<br>
<br>
Monika's nomination by the Queensland Society for Information Technology<br>
in Education (QSITE) is a fitting acknowledgement of her many<br>
contributions to that professional association through management,<br>
conference organisation and presentations,. It is significant that in the<br>
large state of Queensland with many small remote communities, Monika<br>
deliberately set out to ensure that teachers in isolated locations could<br>
still access quality professional development.<br>
<br>
She organised, implemented and mentored e-learning Scholarship 2004, a<br>
partnership between the state-wide education authority Education<br>
Queensland and QSITE. While serving as Chair of two QSITE regional<br>
chapters (QSITE Sunshine Coast and QSITE Outback), Monika established<br>
techniques to deliver valuable training to teachers, particularly<br>
promoting the innovative, effective and interesting use of technology in<br>
education.<br>
<br>
Her expertise in providing remote training attracted national attention<br>
and requests from education authorities in other states for her to conduct<br>
training for their teachers.<br>
