Have spoken to my techie who obviously replied that his solution would firstly depend on each schools’ existing config. Knowing that he has supplied the following<BR>
he Fixes that have been done to improve Vista as follows.<BR>
<BR>
Disable of some networking features, run the following commands on the clients.....<BR>
<BR>
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled <BR>
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled<BR>
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled<BR>
<BR>
Also the following<BR>
<BR>
Change the DelayedApps Registry Key, This allows all local apps to start when specified, in our case start all local apps straight away.<BR>
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced\DelayedApps]<BR>
"Delay_Sec"=dword:00000000<BR>
<BR>
We also Now Deploy the printers through Group Policy rather than Script<BR>
We also Now Deploy Mapped drives through Group Policy Rather than Script<BR>
<BR>
We also Run our Localscripts from the Run Registry Key rather than through Group Policy, We do this because Vist will then run it straight away rather than wait the standard 60 sec then run policies.<BR>

Thanks to all who offered feedback on the great VISTA slowdown. The consensus was clearly leave it alone !<BR>
However, during the last week our techie has found a potential solution to the slow login times and has deployed it. From a 3 to 10 min login ( more often the later) we are down to 1 to 2 min login. All seems rosy at this stage with fingers crossed as we continue to monitor the solution. <BR>
BTW our workstations are Intel Pentium R , 3 Ghz with 2 Gig RAM.<BR>

Quick reality check. Faster computing doesnt really equate to faster thinking. Flasher desktops dont really equate to better looking outcomes. We are preparing students to be great kids with strategies like play and exploration. Lets not turn them into smaller versions adults or industrial fodder. A fun lesson does equate to constructive learning and can even be done with a stick on the beach sand. (grumpy old man waves stick)<BR>

There are many benefits of vista - increased security, faster access to programs with search bar, more control via group policy, better moviemaker/paint and it looks better -and it runs well on an appropriately spec'd machine.<BR>
Ask the kids what they'd like and most would say vista because they have it at home with office 2007.<BR>
Schools should be encouraging use of the latest technology and always looking to move forward.<BR>

Our last batch of 2008 laptops came with VISTA. It operated nowhere else in the school and caused lots of problems.<BR>
<BR>
For this year's laptops the techs created their own XP image and many of those with VISTA are requesting rollbacks.<BR>
