I've had some success with 'GetDataBack'

I mostly use it with 'BartPE'

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/</a> (I think it comes with a trial version
of GDB, and if you want to actually use it you have to pay to licence it)
It has recovered files from a laptop disk that had been imaged by me,
used by a student, imaged again and used by another student, stolen and
reformatted etc, recovered by the police - and files from the first and
second students were able to be recovered. It works away steadily on
damaged disks, getting lots of data back. GDB can be installed on a
desktop machine also. <br><br>
