[Year 12 IT Apps] Youtube? as well as the netspace filter [Scanned] [Spam score:8%]

Steve, agree with all you say.

Trouble is there are a significant number of schools (mostly/all gov't run) that have a tech person who runs/controls their system/network/usage/access/you name it. Principals/exec allow them to control the lot.

Often staff have absolutely no say in the operation and access offered by the network.

That's the problem!

And that's what has just arrived at my school. Tail is wagging the dog. <Sigh>

I can't believe that we are having the conversation about whether to unblock youtube or not - especially for teachers. I always look around the net for interesting things that relate to the content that I teach to make it more relatable - Countless times I have found a site that I wanted to access that has blocked (not by our school, but by netspace (aka 'the department') It makes me sad and angry that our jobs are being made hard by people that are outside our classroom and they are deciding what we can and can't show in our classes. (For the record - it was a business management game that was blocked that made me rant about this, but there has been many many more occasions like this)

Open to students? Well that is another issue - I personally don't mind, although it does bring other classroom management issues to the surface(headphones, etc). But really, if students are going to "become distracted by it" what is stopping them from bringing in a memory stick with content on it, or finding online games (we can't block everything!) It seems like we are scared to let the kids open to the real world while we are under supervision, but they can access anything they like outside of school (or on their phone which is sitting next to them!!!! )(how many parents watch their kids on the net???.....) Don't get me started on the government censor.... A situation occurred today where a student had to get an email from a website that I sent them, and their email was blocked - so they downloaded the key on their phone and then entered it into the website.... *shakes head* (and yes, they were told to use their school email account :)

In my experience, youtube gets abused when an extra is being taken, and the kids have free reign (or a teacher has a teaching method of sitting at the front of the class for 70 minutes...)

Getting back on topic - I'm not advocating that we enable Facebook or MySpace(so 2004!) (even though I think that they also could be useful) My argument is that YouTube is such a valuable resource, to deny teachers access to it is almost as bad as denying students access to technology in the first place.

teachertube for what it is worth is rubbish when comparing it to youtube.

My two cents worth....

We allow full access to YouTube. It helps having a synchronous 100mb pipe and no download limit.

Very useful for T&L

We have YouTube open for teachers and any video they want to use in class can be unblocked and embedded into our LMS

We occasionally open up YouTube to various year levels for special projects

Hi Everyone

Just a general question as to whether your school allows/unblocks YouTube for ITA usage (or any other class).

There's a bit of pressure here for me to open it up, when Netspace's default position is "no" with good reasons.

Any comments or ideas?

Thanks,
