[Year 12 IT Apps] Policy question on computer spying

Watch out, could be illegal. I'll leave it to a lawyer to explain but we
looked at this a decade ago. Check out the policy about the use of
recording equipment such as security cameras as I think the scope covers
what you are describing, keyboard loggers and more. Different to the
helpdesk stuff such as Apple Remote Desktop that could be used to offer
remote assistance.

It is potentially a minefield if you are covertly or routinely looking at
any teachers screen (email, home drive etc.) without their explicit
knowledge, good reason and due process. Can be easily done but basically
the final answer was by all means analyse activity that has been logged and
draft behaviour guidelines, but don't let let technical sweeps and
unauthorised probes replace supervision, senior departmental and union
advice.

I also think it gets increasingly pointless unless you have a full time
agent phone tapping all the conversations in a school, peeking on the
screens of thousands of netbooks and devices and snooping at the contents
of school lockers. Tackle the bad behaviour, not the technology.

Regards Roland
