[Year 12 IT Apps] RDBMS systems

Much as I dislike working with Access and prefer FMP for my own projects,
its terminology seems closer to standard Database terminology and hence more
generalised than FMP probably because of the underlying SQL. Because of this
I feel it is a better introduction to enterprise database software. Simple
examples of its consistency with its big brothers (Oracle, DB2, MSSQL,
MySQL, PostGRES etc) are its use of a tables metaphor for data storage,
left and right joins and the creation of calculations through queries rather
than embedding them and the data in forms(panels?).

Outside of the Arts/Design world do you know of any major users or large
scale deployments of FMP?

We are a mac school and use FMP. I also find it easier than access but then
again haven't used access for many years.

I do find it a pain, as do my students, when doing past exams that are
written in access terminology. I think the VCAA exams should be neutral in
their terminology to cater for the different applications on the market.

hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness

Hi.

Yes, we are a Mac school. Used FileMaker for the first time this year. I
have always used Access in previous schools. I found FileMaker to be easier
to use despite having used Access for about 10 years. Definitely agree that
using either Access or Filemaker is best so as to limit terminology
confusion.

Hi Brad,

The list can correct me if I am wrong but most of the state would use
Access, with some schools using File Maker. I believe there is sometimes
issues on assessments with differences in terminology between the
packages for that reason I would personally stick with the most commonly
used package.

Any File Maker fans out there? Mac schools, I'm looking at you.

Cheers,

Good morning,

I am just after some advice about RDBMS systems.

I am new to teaching year 12 IT and we have been using Access.

Could you recommend another RDBMS system for the school to purchase.
