Thanks Mark

that site has a link to a group who specialise in adaptive technology for
people injured by Land Mines.

Here is their catalogue
http://maic.jmu.edu/HOMIE/ATCfinalupdated.pdf
(all 100 pages)

This has its own section on specialised ICT (pp 45-49) as well as more
general assistive technologies for people who have lost limbs etc. (inc an
incredible system to help triple amputees drive a car, and a full set of
attachable hammers and wrenches for mechanics who have lost their hands).

The Mac/PC debate pales into insignificance when you read this catalogue and
realise that the adaptors that are surgically implanted in people to allow
them to attach hooks, tools etc to what remains of their limbs come in two
sorts - metric and imperial. And the attachments are not interchangeable
between the two systems...

The catalogue is a chilling read, but wouldn't it be great if some of our
talented ICT students could move into careers where their software skills
and hardware knowledge are used to help victims of these cruel devices (and
similar injuries)?

Maybe the area can be considered under ethical and social applications of
ICT eg http://www.capurro.de/rome.ppt
