We used to do it at a previous school with an adventurous sci lab tech 
who mixed up hydrogen and oxygen with water in the bottle.
The bottle was inserted on a plastic conduit pipe that had two wires 
running up the middle and were exposed at the top.  Just add battery!
We did learn that you can't use the same bottle twice. the intial 
explosion sort of annealed (?) the plastic to make it very very brittle, 
so any subsequent launches just shattered the bottle.
Did it out on the oval. Kids loved it!  Boy did we get some height!
