[Year 12 IT Apps] Show file extensions?

A quick question:

Does your school have Windows set up for students to show them the
file extensions, or not? What do you think about the policy?

Ours doesn't show them the extensions. I can see why this may be less
confusing for staff and students with low skill levels, however for
the better students it is probably _more_confusing. At times it's
downright annoying, for example when teaching them HTML and telling
them to guess the extension of an image they wish to include... not
to mention explaining to them why the file they saved from Notepad as
"page1" (.txt) doesn't load up in IE the other "page1" (.htm) does.

Interested to hear what other schools do. While I'm at it, I'm
frustrated by the lack of the right-click menu in windows explorer
for students, and also the blocking of Task Manager--- but I suppose
there may be security reasons for these.
