good idea jack - I used bootable CD's last year, which the kids found not too threatening - particularly for home use.

I used ubuntu   http://www.ubuntu.com/   Just go to their site and they will send you as many CD's as you want - no charge, no strings. The package consists of 1) a boot CD - slow, but a good way to see if linux works on your hardware;
and 2) a full install CD. The only problems i had with the full install were with display drivers for ATI cards on 1 machine.
