And, of course, instead of inserting pictures, you can link to them.

Before clicking "Insert" in the "Insert Picture" dialogue box when 
selecting a picture, carefully look at the Insert button.  Notice the 
down-arrow on the edge of the button?  Click the down-arrow and select 
"Link to file".

This establishes a link to the pic (like a picture is linked to a HTML 
page).  It keeps the file size WAY down, and allows easy editing of the 
picture after the presentation is finished since the pix are still separate.

The only caveat is that the pix must be transported with the PPT or 
they'll show up as broken links.  On the other hand, to distribute a 
bare-bones PPT without the pix, you can easily just send the PPT without 
including the pix.
