[Year 12 IPM] moodle

I agree Brendyn and we will be using http://www.cmsmadesimple.com for our
school website. This isnt a failing of Moodle, just that we don't need a
sledge hammer to crack a small external website. Others have chosen Mambo
for similar reasons.

John, some of the functions you describe john can be done now using the new
database tool. Some of us have already been using the WIki and blogging
functions with Moodle over the past year. You are going to have a lot of fun
trying these out. :-)

I have some reservations when these system are described as glorified
document storage systems. The web is more than a string of word processing
documents in folders and doesnt become better when we link them with a web
page. A library is more than just a collection of books and a loans system
with stuff like chess club, fiction corner and the hum of dialogue.
Similarly it is bigger than a place to store the 'truth' or the 'final word'
.. perhaps more abuzz with people engaged in research, dialogue, reflection
and debate. Regardless of what system we are using, it is going to be a
struggle for us all to get teachers to embrace what really can be done with
Web2.0 technologies.

We are going to see a lot of overlap between all these different solution as
they leap frog over and past each other at various points. It isn't a race
to spot the winning horse as naturally, we will pick what we are most
familiar with and best suits our local needs. There is so much too choose
from in Victoria, there is considerable strength in this diversity with some
fascinating new alliances shared between very different schools, school
systems and educators. I will respect the traditions and choices by others,
avoid 'bagging' other solutions and celebrate what is different.

I note that Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the MIT scientist credited with creating
the internet recently expressed some concerns about some of our online
developments (especially in light of the concentration of media ownership in
Oz)
"Maybe we'll find that some very undemocratic things start happening, and
that misinformation starts taking over the web."
