[Year 12 IPM] Dot plotting software

Nonsense. (he says as politely as possible)

Give them numeric scores for the criteria if you like, just don't add
them up for an overall score and certainly don't rank them.

We need to remember that if a piece of assessment does not help advance
the knowledge or learning of a student then IT IS NOT WORTH DOING.
(probably shouldn't shout, sorry)

And as for feedback to parents, we should be telling them what we are
doing (or going to do) to help their kids not what is wrong with their
kids (which most know already)

PS I have dodgy fluro's in my office so everything is in shades of a
pale off-yellow.

The "bottom line" of virtually all important educational selection
processes is a condensation of data into a single numeric.

It is only poor practice if you do it from laziness - i.e. you have the
time to consider every criteria and provide feedback on it specifically.

Most do not have the time.... Most would have difficulty in defending
any single criteria judgment in the face of an intelligent student (or
parent).

If you end up by condensing criteria into a single grade (or even a
comment that does not stick to mentioning criteria specifically) then
you are using exactly the same process as a person that prefers to do it
numerically....

Nearly every black and white is in reality a continuum of greys if you
look at it closely under a clear light...

Good to see all that Criterion based assessment nonsense thrown out the
window.

Grade them, percentage them and rank them.

Brendan Nelson would be proud, even though he is no longer in charge of
Education (they gave him Defense to play with and isn't that just a
little scary)

PS Bill, don't take this personally, I'm just having a whinge.

Hi Andrew,

Not sure if this helps...

I got sick of converting my marks from one mark to another for SACs etc
and finding what the grade was... so I wrote a simple Excel page which
converts any mark to another and gives the grade and percentage. It just
uses a VLookup function ... bit hard to explain.

You could convert each score individually but it is a bit time consuming
putting in individual numbers. So I do a whole batch at once. Grades can
be changed on the table.

I select my printing margin, print out the page and use it as my
conversion table for that set of marks.

As I said, use it if it helps,

Does anyone know of any software that allows you to plot student's
scores and allocate grade boundaries?

Cheers

Andrew
