we have HD Guard at our school and due to it we have no problem what are kid=
s bring in as when you restart the computer it goes back to how we want it.=
no extra programs loaded, no files missing, nothing. that program has been=
a god send. saved us so much time re imaging our computers etc. so now we=
have no problem with students using USB drives but every now and then we ch=
eck what they are downloading on them and take over the machines to let them=
know that we are always watching. This has given the students a sort of 'Bi=
g Brother is watching' complex which means that the kids don't usually do an=
ything and we generally have a you tell us before we come and get you we wil=
l go more leanent sort of feel going on so (because you get in trouble if yo=
u are beside a person who is doing illegal things and you don't report it) w=
e usually get the kid or the one next to them telling us what is going on so=
we don't have to snoop to much. we have had only 2 problems this year with=
illegal goings on happening that were not reported as they were happening a=
nd they were the day after.

So as a recap with HD Guard we have no issues that mean we need to cancel st=
udents rights to use USB or MP3 players we have actually put one on the book=
list for next year as we have eliminated floppy and CD ROMs in all of our no=
rmal student computers in the school. (graphics Pod and Music Pods still n=
eed them for certain programs).

Hope this is a little insight.

Cheers

hehehe Thanks Margaret ..

Our tech took a different tactic. He did some detective work to identify the=
culprits, quietly talked to some students to figure out their motivation, a=
dded some new software items into the base computer image, gave me a list of=
classes that could better supervise their students, stuck up some notes to=
promote the Friday 'computer games' club and organised some new funny ones=
by students to minimise vandalism. Any 'soft-damage' to an operating system=
with unauthorised 'enhancements' is quickly removed when we reimage any com=
puter room. As he explained .. it takes him longer to eat his lunch.

I was impressed how he understood the importance for students to have a sens=
e of ownership of the college network ... that we are all working together t=
o serve their needs instead of continually struggling with new rules and sec=
urity hacks so that we can better shackle them to a crippled desktop.

Regards Roland

USB is the new floppy .... I think that we should just ban students,
afterall we continually have problems with them.

Just like any *new* technology, develop a policy, educate and contain the
risk rather than ban it completely.
