Hello Mark

At the former school I worked for, I worked on the curriculum CD. The
College made the huge leap from two handbooks to one CD in 2002. I
outsourced a web designer who did wonderful things, however it was still
time consuming. There are so many aspects with respect to making the
move that you should consider.

1.	You will need to ensure that a large proportion of your
clientele has 	access to a CD ROM.
2.	You will need to have access to photos to break up the text.
3.	You will need to obtain permission to use the photos of
students.
4.	You will need to obtain the text and edit it in such a way that
there 	is meaning to parents. Most VCE handbooks just regurgitate the
Study 	Designs and don't mean much in the process.
5.	You will need to work through the designs of the CD
covers,(Jewel/Gatefold etc)and the actual CD face with the web
designer.
6.	Lots of proofing needs to take place.
7	Master copy of the CD needs to be checked to ensure all links
work, 	the CD auto plays, works on both MAC and PC (Netscape/Explorer)
etc....
8	The master CD gets sent to the printers and burners. This takes
time.
9	CDS needs to be stuffed - put into their covers. This also takes
time.
10	The distribution of the CD within the school.


In my experience, economies of scale work in favour of having a
curriculum CD outsourced. The larger the school population the cheaper
the CD becomes. I suggest you ought to budget approximately $5 (based on
2000 CDs burnt) a CD which includes the cost of the web designer and the
burning and printing involved.

We are going to release the new senior school handbook only on CD to 
save printing costs.

The question is whether to get CDs commercially duplicated or whether to

invest in our own CD copier/printer.  If we get our own gear, we may end

up doing a lot more home-cooked CD distribution.

Am wondering now whether to get a CD/DVD copier if we buy our own...

Has anyone else out there had experience with either commercial copying 
or home-made copying, and can recommend a strategy, equipment and/or 
supplier?
