Well said, Gail. The way the Kony film has been analysed by many is
fascinating. I found my own views shifting as I read more and more responses
to the issue. Also such a difference between the comments from young people
and those from 'older' generations.
My Year 11s loved the Guardian 'Three Little Pigs' film. Like Gail, really
interesting discussion ensued. If you go to actual Guardian website, there's
a link back to some older, but similar ads they made.
We need Working Dog to make a new series of 'Frontline' just for VCE English
teachers!!
cheers
Jan

Ok I have avoided commenting until now. This whole scenario was a prime
example of how to kill a worthwhile discussion and the kind of thing which
makes people avoid this list.

Jenny, I personally appreciated you sharing and providing another way of
looking at a part of the course which can be as dry as dry can be.

To get things back to the discussion I will add an idea for people to use
too. The Guardian in London has produced an ad which is based on the Three
Little Pigs (find it on YouTube). I set it as lang analysis for my students
when I was away and it has produced some great discussion on how to approach
the task. Some students tried to start at the top and work their way
through, but the main contention was at the end of the advertisement, so
their entire analysis was based on the wrong contention (a cautionary tale
for the end of year exam perhaps?). It was a complex task as they had to
deal with both written and visual language and work out how to discuss a
twisted fairy tale, embedded in another message.

To add to this task there are now a series of spoofs on the ad as if the Sun
in Britain (famous for their page three girls and their phone hacking) One
of these is hilarious and I have used this to talk (briefly) about news
'spin'

Lets share any way of enhancing the interest level in this task (and if
there are any grammar errors inthis email which I have not proof read I
don't want to know about it!!!)

This is all well and good - I appreciate the input.but it would also be nice
if the feedback and attention were related to what I have set up and shared
rather than my failure to provide a perfectly written email text.

Jenny

Even a proof reader would need to look at that again. But isn't it great
that there are John Bradleys out there to find such errors?

It's "complement", not "compliment" in the sentence in which you have used
it here.

Hi

Just sharing a wiki page I have just started to compliment what we do in the
classroom as we move into Language analysis. Kony 2012
<http://msgsresources.wikispaces.com/KONY+2012> We settled on Kony 2012 as
a focus for three reasons - one it illustrates all the power of visual and
written language to persuade as well as including discussions of social
media. The second is the students are engaged in it. The third is of course
this is provides excellent discussion material for responding to conflict in
encountering conflict - if only it were so easy to ease the conflict burden
in Uganda.

If you have suggestions I welcome them - but please don't try to 'join' the
site - I would like my students to do that. Instead click on this page to
contact <http://msgsresources.wikispaces.com/Connect+with+Jenny+Gilbert> me
or email ideas through to this listJ
