Hi Prue,

The blog is just a sample to get them thinking about and collecting
context related materials and responding to them on a personal level,
which they will then take turns to present extracts of to the class. As
the very 1st introduction to contexts, it's quite free form, not too
guided - very exploratory. Our context reader has lots of images and
supplementary materials with more guided questions and activities to set
the scene for the context as you've suggested below. We have developed
full units of work separately again to focus on the context in our set
texts. All these pieces progressively and ultimately fit together in
preparation for the Creating and Presenting SAC.

Kind regards,
Phadrah

I've looked at these images too Phadrah and they're astonishing. I'm
wondering now about the sort of questions you might ask students to
think
about if they are to link the ideas of your chosen texts, with the
visual
images that they're collecting. How do the images cast light on ideas
raised
in the text, or challenge or explore or question those ideas? How will
you
use them to help students think about their own sense of place in the
landscape - real or imagined? Or - will you be doing something different
with them that I've not thought of? Actually, now that I've asked these
questions I realize that your reader probably answers them

Hi folks, an opportunity for those interested in attending the AATE
National Conference in Adelaide in July.

Cheers
Scott

AATE-ALEA National Conference Scholarships for VATE members

VATE is offering two scholarships to the 2008 AATE-ALEA National
Conference in Adelaide, 6-9 July. The National Conference is a great
opportunity for VATE members to join a national conversation about
English and literacy teaching in Australia and a chance to check out
what teachers from around Australia are doing in their classrooms.
More details about the conference are available on the website:
http://www.englishliteracyconference.com.au/

Each scholarship can be used to pay conference registration, airfares
and accommodation up to $1500. Scholarship winners are asked to
provide a report on the Conference for the VATE Newsletter, VATE's
journal IDIOM, or for the VATE website. One scholarship is reserved
for an early career teacher (<5 years). Current members of VATE
Council and Committees are ineligible, but all other VATE members are
encouraged to apply. To apply address the selection criteria below:

A successful applicant will:
Be a current individual member of VATE
Indicate why they believe they are a strong candidate for a
scholarship and how participation in the conference will benefit
their professional learning
Outline some activities they are willing to undertake to share the
experience with colleagues within and outside of their school (eg a
school PD session, at the VATE Conference)
On return from the conference prepare a response/report for
publication in the VATE Newsletter, IDIOM or the VATE website
Applications should be kept brief and be no longer than two sides of
one page. The closing date for applications is 30 March 2008.

That's fantastic Phadrah. What a lot of beautiful
images. It makes me wish we were doing that context.
We are doing Enxcountering Conflict and as everyone
knows there is an Encountering Conflict Network
Meeting coming up on Thirsday 13th March 4.30 to 6.30
at VATE. I also invite anyone teaching Encountering
Conflict to join the Ning that I have set up to share
resources and discuss on the forum etc.
Have a look at http://year12.ning.com/
Anyone can sign up and you don't have to have your
photo there.

This is fantastic and thanks for sharing it!
We've put together a hardcopy Reader for the students and used a lot of
graphic material too, which is giong to be a strength of this context I
think.
We used a lot of photography by artists like Max Dupain & Ansell Adams,
artworks by Jeffrey Smart, the Heidelberg school, Dali, Drysdale etc.
Even 'American Gothic' as a representation of a particular landscape.
Once we got into it, we found a wide range of material (graphic and
print) and I'm looking forward to delving into it!
