There is also a very useful packet of material from VATE, published a year or
two ago for the new study design and some fabulous books published in England
for their GCE courses in Language. Ring VATE office at 94118500 or look up the
resources available on the vate wbsite at www.vate.org.au
I think also that introducing English Language into the school curriculum over
time skills up teachers in ways that are very relevant to VCE English, which in
its new incarnation draws as much on the 'aspects of language' threads in CSF
and VELS- think of contextual understandings and metalanguage or linguistic
structures and features- as it does on 'text'. Teachers who start thinking
about how to teach English Language also start to think differently/ more
broadly about teaching text for Reading and Responding and Contextual
Understandings, as well as Literature!!. So introducing English Language adds
depth to the repertoire of teachers and faculties and is of benefit to all
students, who must do an English study. Janny McCurry
