Hi folks,

I'm sure most of you are aware that next week is National Literacy
and Numeracy Week. This is a joint initiative between DEST, AATE and
ALEA, and includes National Reading Day. More information on the

> National Reading Day is a new event for NLNW 2007. The event is
> being developed by the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association
> and the Australian Association for the Teaching of English.
> National Reading Day will be held on Wednesday 5 September 2007,
> and presents an opportunity for Australian students to read from
> five books. The event caters for both primary and secondary
> students, with books ranging from a picture book for early
> childhood students to novels for older readers.
>
> A Committee comprising representatives from the Australian
> Association for the Teaching of English, Australian Literacy
> Educators’ Association and the Children’s Book Council of
> Australia has suggested five Australian fiction books to form the
> basis of National Reading Day 2007.
>
> The books include Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French and
> illustrated by Bruce Whatley, Truck Dogs by Graeme Base, Someone
> Like Me by Elaine Forrestal, The Red Shoe by Ursula Dubosarsky, and
> The Running Man by Michael Gerard-Bauer.
>
> Each book considered by the Committee had been short-listed by the
> Children’s Book Council of Australia and written by an Australian
> author. The books also represented a range of publishing groups.
>
> The books preferred by the Committee are not intended to represent
> the full scope of quality children’s literature available for
> primary and secondary school students. They are examples of books
> available to students of various ages.
>
> Teachers may choose to support the reading of the books by using
> the classroom activities available from the National Reading Day
> website.
