[English] Literature Unit 3 Alternative viewpoints

I think that where the descriptors talk of an 'exploration of the values
and assumptions underlying the viewpoints' - that might well come across
in comment on the writer's language. I think also the evaluative aspect
of the 'key skills' might be expressed through analysis of language.
Hopefully this would be explicit rather than implicit. But as Janet
says, the student's own reading must come through in their response to
the reading expressed in the review. Actually, rather than use the
descriptors, I used the key skills for my feedback sheet. I've attached
the one I used. (My students chose to respond to one of three critical
articles on The Woman in White).

To what extent has this analysis and evaluation of the reviewer's
language been used to frame the student's interpretation of the text?
Both things have to be going on, don't they? Are you concerned that the
student does not offer much an explicit, independent reading of the
original text but is caught up in the language of the review?

I need some advice about marking responses to the Literature SAC where
alternative viewpoints are considered. (review of a review, as some call
it). A student has done a close analysis of the reviewer's language and
made evaluative comments about vocabulary choices etc. This is asked for
in the study design, which i overlooked, but the marking
criteria/descriptions do not seem to cover this approach.

What do you thinK?

Helen

Dear teachers

I have been getting a number of requests lately from schools needing
markers
for practice exams (English, ESL, Lit and Language). If any teachers
are
interested or available to mark student exams (the payment is usually
negotiated with the school) could you please contact me at the VATE
office
so I can pass your contact details on.

Kind regards
