[elearning] netbook management

Hi Charmaine,

At my current school (And previous school), both purchased trolleys to
store the laptops. There are specially designed trolleys that allow for
recharging points and security when finished. There are quite a few
companies that make them.

Our library have about 26 on each trolley (A class set), and loan them
out through "BookIt", so it's just like booking a computer room. A
students will be sent over at the start of class to collect them, and
they return them at the end of the class. They are then checked so that
none are missing and all still functional etc and stored in a secure
room. To avoid any potential security problems, my old school did the
same thing with loaning them out, but classes could only use them within
the library so they could be monitored more closely.

Neither has allowed students to borrow the laptops individually.

I think laptop management has become a much bigger issue since the
Digital Revolution Grant which didn't initially allow for infrastructure
so schools without spare buildings, cabling, desks, network
infrastructure or even enough space purchased laptops instead.

Just my thoughts....

Subject: [elearning] netbook management

Does anyone have advice about how to manage netbooks. We are about to
buy 100 for student use.

Do we store them in the library on trolleys?

Do allow students to borrow them like books?

Kind regards
